Gardeners Gospel Oak Health and Safety Policy
Gardeners Gospel Oak is committed to maintaining the highest practicable standards of health, safety and welfare for our employees, clients, visitors, contractors and members of the public who may be affected by our gardening activities. This policy sets out our approach to managing health and safety in all aspects of our garden maintenance, landscaping and related services.
Our Health and Safety Objectives
Our objectives are to prevent accidents, injuries and work related ill health, to protect property and the environment and to continually improve our health and safety performance. We will achieve this by identifying and controlling hazards associated with gardening work, providing clear procedures, and ensuring everyone involved understands their responsibilities.
Management Responsibilities
The management of Gardeners Gospel Oak has overall responsibility for health and safety. This includes establishing and reviewing this policy, ensuring that adequate resources are made available, and that effective arrangements are in place to manage risks that arise from our operations.
Managers will ensure that safe systems of work are developed and implemented, that equipment is maintained in a safe condition, and that employees receive appropriate information, instruction and training. They will monitor compliance with this policy and take action when standards are not met.
Employee Responsibilities
Every employee has a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. Employees must cooperate fully with Gardeners Gospel Oak in implementing this policy and associated procedures.
All staff are required to follow safe working practices, use equipment correctly, wear appropriate personal protective equipment, report hazards, accidents or near misses, and refrain from any behaviour that could compromise safety. Employees are encouraged to raise suggestions for improving health and safety.
Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices
Gardeners Gospel Oak will carry out suitable and proportionate risk assessments for gardening, landscaping and maintenance tasks. These assessments will consider hazards such as use of machinery and tools, manual handling, slips and trips, working at height, exposure to noise, dust and vibration, handling soil and plant material, and the presence of members of the public.
Findings from risk assessments will be used to develop safe working practices. These may include task specific procedures, restrictions on certain activities, selection of suitable tools and equipment, and arrangements for supervision. Risk assessments will be reviewed periodically and whenever there are significant changes in work activities or conditions.
Use of Tools, Machinery and Equipment
All gardening tools and machinery used by Gardeners Gospel Oak will be suitable for their intended purpose, properly maintained and inspected at appropriate intervals. Defective or damaged equipment will be removed from service until repaired or replaced.
Only trained and competent employees will operate powered equipment such as lawnmowers, hedge trimmers, strimmers, blowers and other mechanical tools. Instructions and guidance from manufacturers will be followed at all times. Guards and safety devices must never be bypassed or removed.
Personal Protective Equipment
Gardeners Gospel Oak will provide suitable personal protective equipment where risks cannot be adequately controlled by other means. Depending on the task, this may include safety footwear, gloves, eye and hearing protection, high visibility clothing, respiratory protection and weather appropriate garments.
Employees are required to use the personal protective equipment provided, to look after it properly, and to report any loss or damage so that items can be replaced. Training will be given on the correct selection, fitting, use and storage of protective equipment.
Manual Handling and Physical Work
Many gardening tasks involve lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling and other forms of manual handling. Gardeners Gospel Oak will plan work to minimise the risk of strain and injury, including using mechanical aids and team lifting where appropriate and avoiding unnecessary or unsafe lifting.
Employees will receive guidance on safe manual handling techniques and are expected to work within their physical capabilities. Any concerns about the weight, size or stability of loads must be reported to a supervisor before the task is started.
Chemicals and Substances
Where gardening products such as fertilisers, treatments or similar substances are used, Gardeners Gospel Oak will ensure that appropriate information is obtained and that risks are assessed. Safer alternatives will be selected where possible.
All substances will be stored, handled and applied in accordance with safety information and relevant guidance. Only trained and authorised personnel may use higher risk products. Protective equipment, spill management and safe disposal arrangements will be in place where required.
Work at Height and Use of Ladders
Some gardening tasks, such as hedge cutting or tree work, may require work at height. Gardeners Gospel Oak will avoid work at height where this is reasonably practicable to do so and will otherwise ensure that such work is properly planned and supervised.
Suitable access equipment, such as ladders or platforms, will be selected and checked before use. Staff will be trained on safe use, including securing ladders, maintaining three points of contact and avoiding overreaching. Unstable surfaces and adverse weather conditions will be taken into account before work proceeds.
Public and Client Safety
We recognise our duty to protect clients, visitors, neighbours and members of the public in the areas where we work. Gardeners Gospel Oak will take steps to secure work areas, control access where necessary and minimise disturbance.
Tools and materials will be placed and used so that they do not present tripping or impact hazards. When powered equipment is in use, particular care will be taken to maintain safe distances from people, pets and property. Debris and waste will be cleared promptly and disposed of safely.
Transport, Access and Site Conditions
When travelling to and from sites and moving vehicles or equipment in residential or commercial areas, employees must drive responsibly and comply with relevant traffic and parking requirements. Care will be taken when reversing, manoeuvring and unloading equipment.
Before starting work, site conditions such as ground stability, lighting, access routes, overhead obstructions and underground services will be considered. Work may be postponed or adjusted if conditions, including severe weather, make it unsafe to proceed.
Training, Information and Supervision
Gardeners Gospel Oak will provide appropriate health and safety training and information to all employees. This may include induction training, task specific instruction, refresher training, and toolbox talks. Additional training will be given when new equipment, materials or methods are introduced.
Levels of supervision will be appropriate to the experience and competence of staff and the complexity of the work. Less experienced employees will be supervised more closely until they are assessed as competent to work more independently.
Incident Reporting and Emergency Arrangements
All accidents, injuries, cases of ill health, near misses and dangerous occurrences that arise from our work must be reported promptly to management. Gardeners Gospel Oak will investigate incidents to identify root causes and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
Emergency arrangements will be in place for foreseeable situations such as injury, fire, significant equipment failure, sudden deterioration in weather or discovery of unexpected hazards. Staff will be made aware of these arrangements and of the location of first aid supplies.
Monitoring, Review and Continuous Improvement
Gardeners Gospel Oak is committed to monitoring the effectiveness of this Health and Safety Policy and associated procedures. We will review our performance through site checks, feedback from employees and clients, incident reports and periodic policy reviews.
This policy will be reviewed regularly and updated as necessary to reflect changes in our operations, developments in best practice and any applicable legal requirements. All employees will be informed of any significant changes and are expected to work in accordance with the latest version.
By working together and following this policy, Gardeners Gospel Oak aims to provide gardening services that are not only high quality but also consistently safe for everyone involved.
